"Oh, but don't worry! They're actually on your hard drive. You can download everything, but an hour later, you'll see cloud icons creeping in there. You can get onto the preview channel and get the new version that at least allows you to turn Files on Demand (translation: "We have your files") off (sorta), but even then, what they think you want is the file on your hard drive somewhere in a cache, not in the folder where they are supposed to be. But for my files, I expect reliability and consistency. I like new experiences and am eager to join the beta for many pieces of software I use. In the meantime, the marketing punchline remains "the new experience on MacOs". It was a blunder on their side and no one is going to crucify them if they admit it, but they won't. Most of the issues caused by this update are decisions the OneDrive team made. So, I don't buy into the ' Apple forced Microsoft to do this' narrative. Oh, there was a small inconvenience, I had to create a symbolic link for /Users/m999/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs to /Users/m999/iCloud for quick access to the iCloud via the terminal. I had not a single problem since the switch. After downloading all my files from OneDrive (i.e., it took more or less two days for ~250GB), I switched to iCloud. When this update was pushed, it broke many things, some even as simple as ensuring deleted files go to the Trash so they can, later on, be restored. I had been using OneDrive for roughly five years (i.e., in the past two years with a Microsoft 365 subscription). I've never been so pissed off at a company or a piece of software in the 25+ years I've been messing around computers. Everyone keeps forwarding me to the Office dept, where they tell me they're not equipped to handle it. I can access files if I do it via the website, which is just dumb. THE WORST PART is that MS forced this - I didn't ask for this to happen!!!! They literally had the software take off all of my files and just tossed them into the cloud and were like "F U, we don't care what you think you want." NOW - NONE of my files will download, despite clicking "Download all OD files now." I cannot open anything that's just 'stuck in the cloud'. Then a few weeks ago, everything needed to be re-downloaded. I want ALL of my files on my laptop locally and use OD to sync everything across multiple devices, including my phone. I'm so pissed with MS and the OneDrive team.
